Many would be authors believe they should first start off by just writing their book. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even though you must at some point write your book there are some things that you should do or at least think about before, during and after the book is written.
The first thing you should do is answer the question of why you are writing the book in the first place. Some reason may be:
- For fun
- To build your business
- To enhance you credibility
- To leave a legacy behind
- Or to gain fame and fortune
If yours is the last one on this list then let me tell you that you need to know that only about half of the books published sell more than 250 copies a year. This means if you make $20 per book your annual income is going to be $5,000 or less. To me that’s not fame and fortune. In fact it is poverty wages. Of course if you have 5 books that sell 250 copies a year that’s a little better, but still not even close to fame and fortune.
Right now take some time to clearly define your book.
- What is my concept?
- Who is my target audience?
- Why would anyone want to read it?
- How can I promote it?
What is my concept?
Design is the key to producing the product you have in mind. It must be so well thought out before the writing begins and then be sure to stick with it through to the end.
Who is my target audience?
Your books success depends on getting this question answered. They, after all are going to be the people buying your book. They are the ones you need to know so you can market your book. They are the ones that are going to like or hate your book. If they like it they’ll tell their friends and buy more of your books in the future.
Why would anyone want to read it?
Your book is categorized into a genre along with others. Since it will be one that has been around for a long time there are other authors writing in that genre and if they’ve been doing it any time at all they have a following. What will make the people devoted to that genre and authors pick your book over theirs? The only way to do this at first is through marketing.
How can I promote it?
This is by far the most important part of writing. You must think about promoting your book from the very start. Begin with “The Hook”. “The hook is more important than the book.” It is what sells the book and must be so strong that it will lure those faithful readers into your camp.
