Whether you go the traditional route or the indie self publishing way you are going to be responsible for marketing your book. Unless you are a celebrity or a best selling author the publishing houses are not going to market your book to the public in any way, shape or form. It will be up to you to get your name and your title out there.
Social media is the first and most logical place to start getting your work known. If you’re a first time author you are virtually unknown and therefor so is your name. To take advantage of social media the first thing you need to do is get your name known in the circles of people who read the genre in which you’ve chosen to write. This is where you need to work smart, not hard.
Forums are the best place to start. Finding them is as simple as using your favorite search engine to locate forums in your genre. Once found go ahead and poke around for a bit to see if it’s a good fit for you and your book. Pick two or three and be active in the forum with legitimate posts, advice or answering questions. In other words make your posts of value to the others in the forum.
Blogging is a must for promoting your book. Start by blogging about your progress writing, editing and how your cover was designed. Try to get as many followers as you can to come to your blog and updated it regularly. Suggest that your followers tell their friends and family about your blog to get even more traffic. Reveal some personal things about yourself that you don’t mind sharing.
Of course their are the two biggies; FaceBook and Twitter. Get as many people as you can to follow your book page on FaceBook. Tweet often and link to your blog. Do anything you can to create interest in your book to get people talking about it, sharing it and retweeting it.
